Jamil Ahmed

Assistant Professor

B.Sc in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering; MS in Biochemistry

Dept. of Biochemistry and Chemistry

Jamil Ahmed has been a faculty member in the Department of Biochemistry and Chemistry at Sylhet Agricultural University, Bangladesh, since January 2021. He graduated from Sylhet Agricultural University, Bangladesh, with a BSc in BGE (Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering) degree in 2018 and an MSc (Master of Science) in Biochemistry in 2019. He completed both his BSc in BGE and MSc in Biochemistry degrees with a position of 1st class 1st. As a result of his extraordinary performance during graduate and undergraduate studies, he was offered to join as a faculty member in the Biochemistry and Chemistry department. Being passionate about teaching and research, he availed himself of this opportunity and started his journey as a lecturer in 2021. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in January 2023 because of his satisfactory performances in both research and academics. His undergraduate research focused on isolating unknown microbes to investigate their role in the formation of agarwood. Bacillus spp. was identified as the most common bacteria that could influence the agar fermentation process. During his MS, he had the chance to work on a collaborative research project, an in silico approach to identify the conserved miRNAs in the genome of Corchorus capsularis where they identified 5 miRNAs gene targets that were found to be involved in plant growth, lignin biosynthesis, and secondary wall formation. He was also involved in research where he studied the reaction of heat-stress broilers to green and black tea waste powder by analyzing serum biochemical metabolites. He is leading several projects as a principal scientist in his research group BCC Bioinformatics. Recently they have investigated the potentiality of plant secondary metabolites as possible treatments for Acinetobacter baumannii. Some in silico research is also in the pipeline for publication including the identification of conserved miRNAs in the chocolate-producing plant Theobroma cacao and drug design for Aspergillus fumigatus. Some of his research has been published in well-renowned journals including PLOS Computational Biology, Heliyon, JABET, etc. Currently, he is working as a Principal investigator on “Molecular identification and characterization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and ESBL producing Klebsiella pneumoniae from Buffalo milk in Sylhet region of Bangladesh”. He secured the funds for this project in 2023 from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Bangladesh. He is supervising two undergraduate students in this project to carry out the research. Till now, he has supervised one MS student and two undergraduate final-year students in completing their final-year research. At present, he is supervising one more MS and two undergraduate final-year students to complete their research work. Apart from academics, he is serving as an advisor to several organizations, including the Sylhet Agricultural University Photographic Society and Metronome Musical Club. The primary goals of these groups are to encourage cultural diversity and foster constructive thinking among students. He plays a significant role in encouraging collaboration and communication among University students. His strong aspiration to do cutting-edge research in the field of Biological Sciences is inspiring him to get himself prepared for the Doctoral Study. He finds the program of Biological Science to be immensely fascinating. Because of the subject’s multi-disciplinary nature, every corner of our existence is impacted by this in one or another way. He believes that the tools used in the Advanced Biological Science platform can improve the standard of life by addressing problems related to health and materials.
