Biography:
  • Distinguished Professor Dr. Md. Sharaf Uddin comes off a Muslim noble family in the village of Mongolbari, Dhamrai upazila (sub-district) under the district of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dr. Sharaf was educated at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA), Bangladesh, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh. Before assuming the position of professor he held the position of Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of Agroforestry and Environmental Science, Faculty of Agriculture under the same university. Prior to his appointment as Associate Professor at Sylhet Agricultural University, he was Senior Scientist (Horticulture) at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Consultant at Bangladesh Economic Growth Program Project under the Ministry of Commerce, Bangladesh, and Arboriculturist at Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation. He conducts research related to plant biodiversity conservation and management, horticulture breeding, agroforestry and environmental issues. He has authored or co-authored over 26 technical articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings and books dealing with issues of horticulture breeding, agronomic practices, agroforestry, biodiversity, plant genetic resources conservation and on-farm conservation of plant biodiversity. Dr. Sharaf has received awards from several organizations in recognition of his research and professional contributions. He is the recipient of the COGENT-SEARCA scholarship and HRC scholarship to pursue his MS (Plant Genetic Resources Conservation and Management) and PhD (Horticulture) degree at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Philippines and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh. He received award from Director General of BARI for recognition as a good scientist for managing the research farm efficiently. Dr. Sharaf supervised and evaluated a dozens of MS students Theses research at Sylhet Agricultural University and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh. He was also being engaged himself with several national and international organizations like ‘Save the Nature’ and ‘International Students’ Association’ at UPLB during his study at UPLB, Philippines. He completed his SSC and HSC from Dhaka board during 1981 and 1983 respectively. After that he completed his graduation degree (BSc Ag Hons.) from Bangladesh Agricultural University during 1987. He completed his Masters degree MS (Horticulture) and MS (Plant Genetic Resources Conservation and Management) from Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA) in 1993 and from University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in 2003 respectively. After completion of his MS (Horticulture) degree he joined at Bangladesh-CIP-TPS project under TCRC, BARI as a Scientific Officer and worked there from September 1993 to March 1994. After that he joined at Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation as an Arboriculturist and worked there from March 1994 to January 1995. Again he joined at BARI as a Scientific Officer during January 1995 and worked there as Scientific Officer and Senior Scientific Officer up to October 2013. During his service at BARI he was awarded a scholarship under COGENT-SEARCA to pursue his MS in Plant Genetic Resources Conservation and Management under the UPLB, Philippines during October 2000- February 2003. Again he was awarded another scholarship from Horticulture Research Center to pursue his PhD degree at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University during April 2005 to 2009. During his service at BARI he also served as Consultant at BEGP project under the Ministry of Commerce, GoB during June 2012 to February 2013. In October 2013 he joined at Sylhet Agricultural University as an Associate Professor and worked there and during October 2017 he was promoted to Professor and from then he is serving as Professor at Sylhet Agricultural University. Dr. Sharaf is the author of four reputed books and 23 reputed scientific journal articles related to Agriculture in home and abroad.
