Biography

Dr. Nirmal Chandra Roy was born in 1965 in Nilphamari, Bangladesh. He passed SSC from Matukpur High School, Domar in 1981 and HSC from Carmichael College, Rangpur in 1983 with first divisions. He achieved the BSc Fisheries (Hons) degree in 1988 (exam held in 1991) and the MSc in Aquaculture & Management in 1989 (held in 1995) from BAU, Mymensingh, securing 1st class 4th and 1st class 1st position, respectively. He obtained his PhD from BAU under the DANIDA-funded ENRECA Fellowship program in 2006. Dr. Roy is a well-known "fisheries scientist" in Bangladesh. He was a former Assistant Director of the Department of Fisheries (DoF), Ministry of Fisheries & Livestock. Dr. Roy has earned 27+ years of professional and hands-on experience, mostly involved with fisheries research, extension service, and development activities. He started his professional life with the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) and then switched to the Department of Fisheries (DoF), MoFL. After 21 years serving in BFRI & DoF, Dr. Roy switched to the teaching profession and joined as an Associate Professor at the Department of Fish Biology & Genetics at Sylhet Agricultural University in 2013. Before joining the university, Dr. Roy was involved in research work with the National Agricultural Research System, with a particular research interest in aquaculture (captive breeding and diversified grow-out production systems), and executed various fisheries development and extension projects under DoF, MoFL. His research interests are fish breeding of endangered species, fish genetic and stock improvement, fish biodiversity and conservation. He joined a series of continuing professional development training in the field of fisheries sciences, offered by reputed institutes including AIT, UPM, and UTM. He has experience working with all levels of stakeholders in farming system research and technology dissemination. He has published 35 research articles in international and national peer-reviewed journals, 30 popular articles and two books. Dr. Roy has conducted various research projects funded by different organizations and worked as a Principal Investigator. He possesses different positions such as Life Member, President, Secretary, and Member in different scientific and social organizations. Dr. Roy has been working as an editorial board member for different renowned journals and also as a reviewer for a number of journals and periodicals. At present, he is working as a professor in the Department of Fish Biology and Genetics.
