Biography

Dr. M. M. Mahbub Alam is a Molecular Biologist and Professor at the Department of Fish Health Management, Faculty of Fisheries, Sylhet Agricultural University, Bangladesh. He has extensive education, research and extension education experiences in the field of Aquaculture, Fisheries Management and Population Biology. He obtained his PhD in Biology from the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Iceland, Iceland. He examined phylogenetics, phylogeography, population demography, population structure of several prawn and shrimp species i.e., Fenneropenaeus indicus, Metapenaeus monoceros, Penaeus monodon, Penaeus semisulcatus, Parapenaeopsis sculptilis and Macrobrachium rosenbergii utilizing mitochondrial markers (includes COI, 16S rRNA, tRNA genes and Control Region), microsatellites, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and ddRAD sequence variation. He reported distinct lineages or cryptic species in F. indicus, P. semisulcatus, P. monodon and Metapenaeus monoceros in the Indo-West Pacific region. He also detected distinct population structures in P. monodon and M. rosenbergii within Bangladesh waters. He has expertise in DNA sequencing, NGS (ddRADseq, 2bRADseq, etc.) along with Bioinformatics and sequence data analysis. Besides, he completed Bachelor of Science in Fisheries (Hons.) and Master of Science in Fisheries Management degrees from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh with distinct results. He is very much interested to continue his research in the field of Molecular Immunology, Phylogenetics, Phylogeography, Population Genetics and Genomics of fishes and invertebrates, Detection of adaptive genes, molecular diagnosis of fish and shellfish diseases, etc. He visited India, Belgium, Iceland, France, Sweden, Norway and United States of America for academic purposes.
