Biography
Distinguished Professor Dr. Md. Sharaf Uddin currently is working as Professor under the Dept. of Agroforestry and Environmental Science at Faculty of Agriculture, Sylhet Agricultural University, Bangladesh since October 2017. Before holding the position of professor he hold the position of Associate professor during October 2013- October 2017 and Chairman (November 2013-November 2017 and November 2019-November 2021) of the Department of Agroforestry and Environmental Science at Sylhet Agricultural University. Prior to his appointment as Associate Professor he was a Scientist (January 1995-October 2013) at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). During his service at BARI he was also consultant at USAID funded Bangladesh Economic Growth Program Project under Ministry of Commerce, Bangladesh during July 2012-April 2013; Before appointed as a Scientist at BARI he was appointed as Arboriculturist and Horticulturist at Bangladesh Folk Art and Crafts Foundation and Tuber Crops Research center, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute for more than 1.5 years. Dr. Sharaf obtained his PhD (Horticulture) from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh-2009, MS (Plant Genetic Resources Conservation and Management-PGRCM) from University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Philippines-2003, MS (Horticulture) from Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA), Bangladesh-1993 and BSc Ag. (Hos.) from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU)-1987. Dr Sharaf conducts research and supervise MS students in the areas of plant biodiversity conservation and management, horticulture, environmental issues, biotechnology and genetic engineering and Agroforestry, climate smart agriculture, food and nutritional security in Bangladesh. Dr. Sharaf successfully completed 12 projects during his tenure of service during his service as a researcher and academia for more than 31 years. Dr. Sharaf has authored and co-authored over 60 research articles in peer reviewed scientific journals (National-31 and International-21, conference proceedings and books dealing with issues of crop production, management and breeding, plant genetic resources conservation and management, plant and insect biodiversity, agroforestry system, environmental issues, climate smart agriculture. He has a Google scholar citation of 289, h-index 9 and i-10 index 8. He has contribution in proceeding papers (Keynote speaker-02, Oral presentation- 05 and poster presentation-03. Besides, Dr. Sharaf reviewed 31 journal articles both national (10) and international (21). He is also reviewer of national (03) and international (05) journals. Up to now Dr. Sharaf supervised more than three dozens of MS Students (15 as supervisor and 30 as Co-supervisor) under the Department of Agroforestry and Environmental Science, Horticulture, Entomology, Crop Botany and Tea production Technology, Plant and Environmental Biotechnology, Finance and Banking, as a supervisor and co-supervisor. Dr. Sharaf evaluated more than three dozens of MS Thesis related to agroforestry, environmental science, entomology, horticulture, plant pathology, crop botany, Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Entomology and agronomy of Sylhet Agricultural University and Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dr. Sharaf attended more than 50 national and international seminar, conference and workshops. conducted 05 national workshops, 21 training. Dr. Sharaf has received awards in recognition of his research and professional contributions. He received DG, BARI Award/1997 for his outstanding activities as Scientist and Farm supervisor. He was awarded scholarship from COGENT-SEARCA and HRC to pursue his MS (Plant Genetic Resources Conservation and Management) at UPLB, Philippines during October 2000-February 2003 and PhD at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh during April 2005 to 2009. Dr. Sharaf visited different research fields of the Philippines and Indonesia under the COGENT-SEARCA funding. Dr. Sharaf is a member of Krishibid Institution Bangladesh, Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon, Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science, Bangladesh Society for Horticultural Science, Ecological Society of Bangladesh. He was also being engaged himself with several national and international organizations like ‘Save the Nature’ and ‘International Students’ Association’ at UPLB during his study at UPLB, Philippines.
