Continuing growth of population is an important challenge to sustain food security in Bangladesh. The population is still increasing by 1.8 million and the country is losing one percent of arable land every year. So, producing Genetically Modified Crops is the reality in Bangladesh. Before commercializing a Genetically Modified Crop, it must pass through a rigorous process to verify whether it is safe for human, animal and environment.
Computers are used for keeping records such as budget information, farm equipment inventories and animal health forms.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are being used for developing ranking systems that evaluate land and provide a site assessment to aid what is now known as precision agriculture. These hi-tech, interactive systems provide information based knowledge on a variety of factors such as soil conditions, drainage and slope conditions, soil pH and nutrient status, etc.GIS helps improve agricultural record keeping. It does this by compiling various data in an easily assessable system that farmers can look at. GIS helps farmers tremendously in the upkeep and functions of their land and crops. GIS technology is being increasingly employed by agriculture researchers to create resource database and to arrive at appropriate solutions/strategies for sustainable development of agricultural resources.
Global Positioning System (GPS) based technologies also help to monitor irrigation, field mapping, soil sampling, tractor guidance and crop scouting. This kind of technology equips farmers with enough information to increase crop yield in a manner that is consistent with the best environmental practices for sustainable agriculture.
