Department of

Epidemiology and Public Health

Overview

Brief background and history:

We are living in the era, where infectious diseases and food safety is the primary concern for the public health. Expertise in critical areas of veterinary epidemiology, veterinary public health, and food safety are of paramount importance to address these issues successfully. However, countries like Bangladesh severely lack expertise in these areas. Recent outbreaks of HPAI, Nipah viruses, and use of toxic chemical food preservatives (e.g.formalin) in Bangladesh reminded us the shortage of expertise. Thus, it was felt necessary to develop teaching and learning facilities to develop trained and skilled manpower in the areas of veterinary epidemiology, veterinary public health, and food safety in Bangladesh. Sylhet Agricultural University came forward and took initiatives to develop such facility. In February 2013, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (DEPH) was established, to educate graduate level epidemiologists and veterinary public health students - first of its nature in Bangladesh.  Dr. Syed Sayeem Uddin Ahmed became the founder Chairman of the Department who played a critical role in its inception. Later, Dr. Suman Paul joined the department as the second member.

Since inception, department focused on developing master degree program on the epidemiology and public health and within very short time finalizes curriculum and syllabus for prospective Master of Science in Epidemiology and Public Health (MEPH) Programme. In July 2013, the first batch of master's student was enrolled, and at present 13 masters students are continuing their education in the same program.
